Exploring Innovations in Neurological Surgery Techniques

Neurological surgeons diagnose and treat conditions affecting the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. They perform operations to address a range of neurological disorders. New techniques and technologies aim to refine surgical procedures and approaches for patients, providing more options for addressing neurological conditions. Here are some innovations in neurological surgery techniques:

Neuromodulation Surgery

Neuromodulation alters nerve activity through targeted electrical or chemical stimulation to influence the nervous system. Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) stimulation is designed to manage chronic pain by targeting nerves in the DRG. This structure in the spinal cord processes pain signals. Electrical leads are placed near the DRG, and they deliver controlled electrical impulses to disrupt pain signals before they reach the brain. DRG stimulation can be effective for individuals with chronic, localized pain conditions, such as complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) or pain following surgery. This approach provides a targeted solution, enabling more precise pain relief compared to traditional spinal cord stimulation.

Artificial Disc Replacement Surgery

Artificial disc replacement is an option for addressing conditions that affect the cervical spine, such as herniated discs or degenerative disc disease. During this procedure, neurological surgeons remove the damaged intervertebral disc and insert a prosthetic designed to replicate the movement and cushioning of a healthy disc. Unlike spinal fusion, which connects vertebrae and restricts movement, disc replacement maintains flexibility between vertebrae.

This method is typically recommended when non-surgical methods have not provided the desired relief. The prosthetic disc is made from materials such as metal alloys and medical-grade plastic to verify lasting strength. The spine is accessed through an incision at the front of the neck, minimizing disruption to muscles at the back of the neck. This may help reduce surgical recovery time.

SI Joint Surgery

The sacroiliac (SI) joint, located where the lower spine meets the pelvis, can become a source of pain and affect the:

  • Lower back
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Legs

SI joint dysfunction may arise from injury, arthritis, or changes during pregnancy. When conservative treatments, like physical therapy, injections, or medication, do not improve symptoms, surgery is a potential solution. SI joint fusion is a minimally invasive procedure designed to stabilize the joint. Surgeons use small incisions to place implants, including hollow screws or bone grafts, to encourage the bones to fuse over time. Reducing movement in the SI joint helps limit the pain signals caused by instability or inflammation. Post-operative care often involves rehabilitation to maintain strength and mobility in the surrounding areas of the pelvis and spine.

Endoscopic Surgery

Endoscopic surgical techniques enable neurosurgeons to operate on the brain and spine with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. An endoscope is a slim instrument equipped with a high-definition camera and light source. It transmits real-time images to a monitor, allowing surgeons to visualize the surgical field while making small incisions.

In brain surgery, endoscopic surgery allows for the removal of tumors by guiding the endoscope through the nasal passages to access structures without incisions in the skull. For spinal conditions, this procedure may help remove herniated discs or treat spinal stenosis. These techniques generally result in smaller scars and a shorter hospital stay.

Work With Neurological Surgeons

Neurological surgery continues to evolve as specialists apply new technologies and approaches to patient care. Procedures such as neuromodulation, artificial disc replacement, SI joint fusion, and endoscopic surgery are only a few innovations. Each technique plays a role in addressing a set of neurological conditions, expanding options for patients and practitioners. A neurological surgeon can provide a thorough evaluation and tailored recommendations based on your health needs.
